Digital Lumber provides infrastructure components and support that enable businesses to have an reliable, dependable computer network for a fraction of the cost that it would normally require. Digital Lumber enables businesses that can't afford a full-time system administrator to have a computer network and network services that would normally require one, and enables businesses that can afford a full-time system administrator (or 100 full-time system administrators) to have a more-reliable network and more robust network services.
Our software is designed from the ground up by system administrators who actually use and depend on the software they write to do their jobs. We feel that there is a big difference between this and people whose job is to just write software (and hence not be a system administrator or deal with the day-to-day issues that system administrators face). We feel that this difference causes a lot of good software to be very confusing and hard to manage. We feel that our software isn't, and that using it allows us (or anyone using our software) to provide far better system administration and infrastructure support than would otherwise be possible.
While we will certainly strive to provide software to enable the most common network services, we realize that no individual or company (even Microsoft :-) can provide software for every possible scenerio. We strive to make our software work well with other software. We provide all of our software under an open source license so that anyone who uses our software can depend on the fact that it can be made to work with other software. We feel this is an absolute necessity for a reliable network infrastructure. Anyone who tells you otherwise simply has not run a reliable infrastructure.
